If you love hearing INTO a recording, actually being able to \"see\" the performers, and feeling as if you are sitting in the studio with the band, this is the record for you. It's what vintage all analog recordings are known for -- \u003ci\u003ethis sound\u003c\/i\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you exclusively play modern repressings of vintage recordings, I can say without fear of contradiction that you have never heard this kind of sound on vinyl. CDs give you clean and clear. Only the best vintage vinyl pressings offer the kind of Tubey Magic that was on the tapes even as late as \u003ca href=\"\/search?q=tag:%221981%22\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e1981\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTight, note-like, rich, full-bodied bass, with the correct amount of weight down low\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eNatural tonality in the midrange -- with all the instruments having the correct timbre\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTransparency and resolution, critical to hearing into the three-dimensional studio space\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo doubt there's more but we hope that should do for now. \u003ci\u003ePlaying the record is the only way to hear all of the qualities we discuss above,\u003c\/i\u003e and playing the best pressings against a pile of other copies under rigorously controlled conditions is the only way to find a pressing that sounds as good as this one does.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThen Play On\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou know how you can tell when you have a Hot Stamper? It’s the record you let play all the way through. When the sound is right it makes you want to hear more. Since the opening track of this record is one of the keys to knowing whether it’s mastered and pressed properly, once you get past the sibilance hurdle on track one, the next step is to find out how the challenges presented by the rest of the tracks are handled. Actually, what you really want to know is how good each song can sound -- what it sounds like when it’s right. Once the quality of the mastering has been established, the fun part is to play the rest of the album, to hear it really come alive! This is the surest sign of a good pressing. You \u003cu\u003ewant\u003c\/u\u003e to turn it up, and you \u003cu\u003ecan\u003c\/u\u003e turn it up, because the mastering is right. The distortion levels are low and the tonal balance is correct at the extremes. Records with too much bass and especially too much top end can’t be played loud. The louder you play them the worse they get. Try playing the average MOFI at a loud volume. All that extra 10k starts to make your brain hurt. The CBS Half-Speed of this album is like that. It’s frustrating -- the music makes you want to turn it up but the sound says forget it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eBilly Joel Agrees With Me\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was recently perusing the liner notes for this album and came across this Post Script from Billy Joel, which I had overlooked before.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\"I know you don’t have a P.A. system in your house, but if you want to get as close as possible to the real thing, invite your cranky neighbors over and play this record as loud as you can.\"\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eCan YOU Find One That Sounds Like This?\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe kind of money we are charging for this record is ridiculous on at least one level: the album can be found in any used record store for cheap. It’s unlikely the price would ever be more than about $5, $10 tops. So the copy we are selling here obviously did not cost me a lot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut can you find one that sounds like this? I would say you would have to find, buy, clean and audition at least ten and maybe as many as twenty copies to get one that sounds this good.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd of course, after you’ve bought four or five, cleaned them, and spent the better part of a day listening to them, you may have found one that sounds awfully good. Is it really as good as the one we are selling? Maybe, but then again, maybe not. (Maybe it’s even better! There’s always a Hotter Stamper that hasn’t been found yet.) Having played this record for decades, when I hear it sound like this, I know I am playing a very very special copy, one that’s not that easy to come by in my experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eBilly Joel’s Best Album\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGetting back to more important matters, without a doubt this is Billy Joel’s best album. These are the songs that didn’t get played to death on the radio. Here they get energetic and enthusiastic performances in a live setting, which makes his studio stuff sound canned in comparison. If you want one good Billy Joel album, either to start your collection or to just have the one, this is the one to have. The entertainment value is OFF THE SCALES. The vocals aren't \"back there\" somewhere, lost in the mix. They're front and center where any recording engineer worth his salt would put them.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eThe Big Sound\u003c\/strong\u003e comes next -- wall to wall, lots of depth, huge space, three-dimensionality, all that sort of thing.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThen \u003cstrong\u003etransient information\u003c\/strong\u003e -- fast, clear, sharp attacks, not the smear and thickness so common to these LPs.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eTight punchy bass\u003c\/strong\u003e -- which ties in with good transient information, also the issue of frequency extension further down.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eNext: \u003cstrong\u003etransparency\u003c\/strong\u003e -- the quality that allows you to hear deep into the soundfield, showing you the space and air around all the instruments.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eExtend the top and bottom\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003ci\u003evoila\u003c\/i\u003e, you have The Real Thing -- an honest to goodness Hot Stamper.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eVinyl Condition\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMint Minus Minus and maybe a bit better is about as quiet as any vintage pressing will play, and since only the right vintage pressings have any hope of sounding good on this album, that will most often be the playing condition of the copies we sell.
