Benny Carter Swingin' the '20s

The Reissues Are Better, Right?

  (Item #: carteswing_original)

In some ways yes, in some ways no, and we are happy to lay it all out for you based on the critical listening we undertook recently as part of one of our Hot Stamper shootouts for this classic Contermporary recording. With our VTA carefully adjusted for each pressing, here's how we weighed the tradeoffs in sound of the originals versus the reissues.

This superb sounding ORIGINAL Black Label Contemporary pressing of Benny Carter's swingin’ jazz quartet is the very definition of a top jazz stereo recording from the late '50s mastered through an all tube chain. There’s good extension on the top end for an early pressing, with TONS of what you would most expect: Tubey Magic and Richness. If th

Art Pepper + Eleven

The Originals Are Better, Right?

  (Item #: peppemoder_original)

Nope. It’s just another Record Myth.

We used to get the original Contemporary pressings in all the time, but so few are mastered right practically none ever make it to the site. Some are pure muck; others have bass that's so bloated it's hard to tell if it's electric or acoustic. And where's the presence? We dropped the needle on a few Black Label copies of this title and were entirely underwhelmed.

Sergio Mendes
Stillness

  (Item #: mendestill_0513)

Our Price: $399.99

TWO STUNNING SIDES RATING AT OR NEAR A+++! We recently finished another big Stillness shootout, and this copy was by far the best we heard. This is an incredibly well-recorded album -- a member of our Top 100, in fact -- but the typical copy just can't bring it to life the way our Hot Stampers can. At its best, the soundfield itself has a three-dimensional quality that will absolutely blow you away (assuming you have a well-designed, properly treated listening room of course.)

The Band
Music From Big Pink

  (Item #: band_music_0513)

Our Price: $499.99

The best copy of The Band's debut to ever hit the site, with some of the quietest vinyl we'll ever find for this album? You better believe it! We had a major shootout for this seminal album and this was the big winner, rating A+++ on both sides and playing mostly Mint Minus throughout. The sound is big, solid, tubey and natural. The transparency is superb!

The Doors
L.A. Woman

  (Item #: doorslawom_0513_2)

Our Price: $149.99

TWO Very Good A+ sides on one of the most difficult Doors albums to find good sound for. We've been struggling with it for YEARS with practically nothing to show for it until now. Most copies aren't even as good as the CD, and just finding clean copies that have stampers with any potential has become incredibly difficult. This one is a a substantial step up from the average copy.

Massenet / Le Cid / Fremaux

  (Item #: masselecid_emi_0513)

Our Price: $299.99

SUPERB Super Hot Stamper sound on BOTH sides of this very quiet EMI pressing. This is a record that deserves to be on a Super Disc list; if Harry hadn't already put it there we certainly would have. (We would love to compile a Super Disc list of our own, but unless you have just the right copy of whatever title is on the list, you may not have anything like Super Disc sound quality, so why a list at all?)

Both sides of this TAS List disc contain audiophile Must Own Demonstration pieces, full of Tubey Magic, powerful dynamics, real depth, lifelike ambience, and accurate instrumental timbres. The sound is so rich you will not believe you are listening to an EMI. If more EMI records sounded like this we would be putting them on the site left and right. Unfortunately, in our experience the majority are thin, shrill and vague. Not so here!

Grieg / Peer Gynt / Gruner-Hegge / Oslo Phil.

  (Item #: griegpeerg_rca_0513)

Our Price: $299.99

As much as I like Fjeldstad's Peer Gynt on Decca/London with the LSO, I have to say that Odd Gruner-Hegge (love that first name!) and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra turn in the better of two performances. To these ears theirs is more lyrical; it flows more naturally both within and between the individual movements.

The Oslo Phil also gives me more of a sense that they are feeling the joy in the playing of these works; I do not get quite the same feeling from the LSO. As we worked our way through more and more Living Stereo copies, the Oslo Phil.'s enthusiasm and love for the music became recognizably stronger, and, as one would expect, more agreeable and involving.

Prokofiev / Lt. Kije & Scythian Suite / Abbado (33 RPM)

  (Item #: prokoltkij_33_0513)

Our Price: $199.99

This German 33 RPM White Hot Stamper pressing of our favorite recording of Prokofieff's wonderful Scythian Suite has SUPERB SOUND. This one gets loud like no other and holds up under the onslaught of the orchestra in a way we have never heard before. Yes it can be done! The sound just comes jumpin' out of the speakers with energy and power beyond all expectations. Amazing extension on both ends of the spectrum and correct tonality throughout.

The work, which takes up side one, almost never sounds good; most copies are intolerably smeary and shrill. Now that I've heard it properly I've come to realize it's a top flight performance with excellent sonics. It takes an orchestra of the highest caliber to pull off a complex and difficult work such as this. No other performance I've ever heard can compete with it.

Be-Bop Deluxe
Axe Victim

  (Item #: bebopaxevi_0513)

Our Price: $199.99

If you love the British Tubey Magical, rich (some might even call it overly rich) sound of Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie crossed with Mott the Hoople, Axe Victim just might make a wonderful addition to your collection. We would love to find you some Hot Stampers of Ziggy and All the Young Dudes, but they simply aren't findable at the prices we can afford to pay, so until then, here is that sound in spades. And the music is good too: clever, well-produced, full of rock and roll energy and guitar pyrotechnics.

The second song on side two boasts a guitar sound so big and dynamic that it single-handedly turns the track into a demonstration of just how good analog recording technology was in the '70s. This record has the kind of Audio Excitement that's almost shocking in a way. We hear dynamics such as these so infrequently that it's easy to forget records (and guitars) can actually get this loud. What a thrill.

Billy Joel
52nd Street

  (Item #: joel_52nds_0513)

Our Price: $249.99

TWO EXCELLENT SIDES, including an AMAZING A+++ SIDE ONE! This is in our opinion the Best Sounding Billy Joel Album, and when you hear this pressing you'll understand exactly why. When it comes to 52nd Street -- or Billy Joel, for that matter -- this side one is As Good As It Gets (AGAIG), folks!
